I am Philip Kwesi Agyei, A Ghanaian and live in Ghanas capital city Accra. 25 yrs and male
To be more honest the unemployment situation is still major National issue here in Ghana, for the past years, various governments administration have initiated various policies in trying and find solutions to the unemployment situation in the country, but in my opinion, all these policies have yielded know concrete result, with almost every government moving around the same policy line. the Present government is embarking on what is called the VENTURE CAPITAL FUND, which is suppose to be the engine Backbone of the nations youth business seed capital, but this I consider more of a repetition of past policies which has so far yielded know positive results.
Overview
In outlining the effects of youth unemployment situation here in Ghana, we must also understand that, in solving the problem of unemployments the two parties must all contributes their quota, that is the government and the youth. The unemployment situation here in Ghana has contributed to the following:
- The Ghanaian youth in the absence of employment opportunities have become more and more eager to acquire wealth within a short possible period. And since wealth is acquired through a systematic process, they find themselves in fraudulent and criminal activities. E.g. of such activities are the recent uprising internet fraud, arm rubbing, money laundering and what is other wise known as 419.
- Employment has now become, whom you know, graduates sometime have to know someone within particular company or industry before one can get a job.
- The unemployment situation in Ghana is growing high and high every day, despite government efforts in find amicable solution to youth unemployment, the youth are neither helping themselves, yes, it is true that various governmental policies towards the unemployment situation are really not working on practical terms, a clear e.g. is the newly introduced Venture Capital Fund, which was establish with intention of creating an avenue where young people can access capital to starts business, but to our surprise this Fund has various requirements that makes it impossible for a new graduate to access the Fund. The youth must also desist from the look for job attitude, but rather develop entrepreneurship mind, for this is the future growth of every nation.
Education
The countrys education system is really impressive, yet still there is much work to be done, to improve it for the better. The most disturbing aspect of the Ghanas education, is the system where student are trained with intention of passing examination, this problem has contributed to the countrys long unemployment situation. The system has over the years produce graduates who comes out of school, only to look for job.
Government must focus on creating an enabling environment or a system of education which trains student to develop entrepreneurship mind, instead of the look for job attitude.
Certainly if I am asked whether the system we run today prepares the youth for the job market, I will certainly say NO, because the system only prepare young people to pass their examination.
If one is to conduct a survey into this issue, companies in the country will confirm that, graduates who are likely to find jobs within the limited job market, will revealed that, graduate employees normally goes through in service training before giving responsibility which normally takes one to two years.
Training
There are various training and institutions which the government have putting in place to develop the youth E.g. is the Scholarship Secretariat here in Accra, the unfortunate thing about this training or government support initiated toward youth development is that, they exist without most Ghanaian knowing it.
The institution therefore becomes important to only employees, families, friends and relatives.
One institution initiated by the government towards youth development which I considered successful is the Cocoa Board Scholarship for students, even with that, there is a question of whether eligibility criteria are followed correctly.
Policy
In fact the countrys policy of creating and making available policies for the youth to get in involve in the agricultural sector will certainly not work. Presently a lot of capital and resources are channeled into District Assemblies to encourage the youth into agriculture.
Firstly, as whether these monies are given to the youth is another question to be answered. An example of such government intervention is the NATIONAL YOUTH EMPLOYMENT SCHEME. Honestly this is not working.
Government should rather create an enabling environment where the youth can pursue their field of interest.
Again if the government believes in private sector development, then initiative such as the National Youth Employment Scheme should be manage by private entities, which will make such opportunities open, clear and accessible to the people who really need it.
