ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND
Onkod Women Empowerment and Relief Organization (OWERO) is non-profit, non governmental organization head quartered in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.
OWERO is an initiative launched by a group of Somalia women intellectual’s activists on March 2006, to implement different programs of peace and community development.
MAIN FIELDS
Ø Human Right protection and advocating
Ø Peace and Conflict Resolution and building transformation
Ø Child protection and cleaning living environments
Ø Public awareness and empowerment of widow women and girls for income generation and self reliance
Ø Promotion of education and healthcare of HIV/AIDS
STRUCTURE
OWERO is composed of board of trustee and a board of executive management, the board of trustee been the paramount organ of the organization, which constitutes representatives of the communities, meets every 2 years when it elects the BOE, which is the decision making implementing body of the organization, and also executing the daily activities, the comprises of hierarchal responsibilities.
COVERAGE AREA
The organization operates in and covers Banadir, Lower Shabele and Middle Juba regions of Somalia. It works very closely with the target communities in its coverage areas in participatory approach;
CORE SECTORS
Working alongside existing local structures, and international partners bilateral, multilateral, and other local and international NGO’s OWERO is actively involved in the following three areas of operation:
· Empowerment of widow women and girls for income generation and self-reliance
· Conflict transformation and peace building
· Promotion of education, good health and clean living environment
· Relief and emergency activities
OBJECTIVES
Ingrained within the framework of the three board programmatic areas,
The following constitute OWERO general and specific objectives which guide its main operational activities:
· Train and equip widow women and internally displaced persons with the pre-requisite skills to transform conflict and build peace among individuals and communities
· Employ both proactive and reactive methodologies and tools in combating widow women
· Undertake field research, formulate and advocate for policy alternatives, and NGO’s engaged in policy making – at local, inter, national and international level – aimed at the containment and cessation of the scope and scale of conflict and its resolution
· Sensitize Somali stakeholders on the eradication of negative traditional practices including but not limited to Female Genital Mutilation (FMG) across the country by setting piloted precedents
· Promote widow women capacity in the areas of Health, Educational and entrepreneurship by erecting facilities and providing relevant training
VISION
To see Somali people dwelling in peace, stability, prosperity and justice so as to be pioneer in development the community particularly widow women, girls and street children towards realization of their own potentials.
MISSION
Onkod Women Empowerment Relief Organization (OWERO) is non-profit, non-governmental Organization headquartered in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.
OWERO is an initiative launched by a group of Somali women and intellectual activists on March, 2006 to implement different programs of peace and community development, build economic capacity of the people from the family level as the foundation of society to become Somali with peaceful, coexistence, Human Right respecting and healthy atmosphere.
GOALS
Somali Widow Women and Child enjoying Education and development
· Respecting and advocating of Human Rights
· To encourage the Somali margins child to join the primary Education
· Spread of Basic Education
· Promotion and support widow women providing relevant training
· Enhance community awareness on the negative effects of the child drug abuse and HIV/AIDS
