Sujet: RE: [FTUC] Tesco Fairtrade jam[Scanned]
Envoyé: Oct 18th, 2007 - 06:44:43

The fact that they use local strawberries means that by definition they can't be fairly traded, so you must ask yourself what is the only ingredient that is fairly traded? without even looking I know it has to be sugar, because jam is fruit water and sugar right?. To get a fair trade mark the fair trade foundation says "the minimum Fairtrade content is 20% of the dry weight of any one ingredient" (source; Fair Trade Foundation), so a 340 jar of "fairtrade" jam can contain as little as 68g of fairtrade sugar, Fairtrade sugar is £800 per tonne, so each jar contains 5.44pence worth of fairtrade ingredients. So, say the jam is an average £1.90 then 0.02 percent of the product price is from a fairtrade source, I'm not that convinced, I'd go to my local independent retailer and look for Tradecraft or even better Biofair spreads (who actually use fairtrade fruit in their spreads as well as sugar) find the ingredients here http://www.windmillorganics.com/product_search.php?frm_id=psearc&psearc_is_valid=1&brand=0&product=28&veggie=&submit_psearc=Search+Products

Tescos say that if they receive 5 customer feedback forms requesting an item
they will stock it. Can you and your local Fairtrade group fill in
customer requests?

However if sales don't follow they obviously won't reorder.

Kind regards,

Mark
