Joint Press Release: Zimbabwe AIDS Civil Society Organisations Seek to Build on Success
SAfAIDS and ZAN
25 September 2008
****************
Harare, Zimbabwe -Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS) and Zimbabwe AIDS Network (ZAN) will, next week, jointly conduct an International AIDS Conference 2008 feedback meeting to share best practices in AIDS programming from all over the world, thus facilitating replication with adaptation to the Zimbabwean context.
The meeting, which will be titled "Universal Action Now: Global Thinking- Local Action" is scheduled for September 29 at the Harare International Conference Centre. It will provide an opportunity for AIDS civil society representatives who did not go to Mexico to learn about new HIV and AIDS developments in order to influence programming at local level.
"There are several key issues that came out of Mexico that people need to be aware of, like the debate around when to start people on anti-retroviral therapy. There was also a debate about the need to start people on treatment when their CD4 is still high and they are healthy rather than wait until it is around 250 as we are currently doing, which we need to discuss further," said Mrs Lois Chingandu, Southern Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS), Executive Director.
She added that issues were also raised about whether people who have been on treatment should still be considered to be highly infectious.
Another highlight of the feedback meeting will be Zimbabwe's decline in prevalence. While the country celebrates an important milestone of reversing the prevalence, it is important to realise that it will take a lot of hard work to maintain this decline.
"This event affords an opportunity to share lessons from other parts of the world, and therefore ensure that local programmes are informed by what works. That way, we can continue making progress against the epidemic," said Mrs. Chingandu.
Key speakers will be Zimbabweans who attended the International AIDS Conference. They will present summaries of key findings, new information, strategies and innovative models from other countries which are relevant to Zimbabwe.
Over 500 people, including the Minister of Health and Child Welfare Dr David Parirenyatwa, the National AIDS Council Director Dr Tapuwa Magure, People Living with HIV, HIV and AIDS activists, AIDS Service Organisations, Private Sector Organisations, Faith Based Organisations and health institutions, will attend the meeting.
The event will reinforce the need to localise global targets of ensuring access to care, treatment and support agreed to by world leaders in 2001 at the UN Special Assembly on HIV and AIDS (UNGASS). It also seeks to empower locally based civil society to fully represent themselves at future international conferences.
An exhibition of materials and posters presented at the Mexico conference will be showcased at the event, which will enhance participants' knowledge and understanding of what transpired at the International AIDS Conference 2008.
