  Training of Trainers on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights.
ARASA

2008 Annual Training of Trainers Programme on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights.

Dear PZam members,

Applications are invited for participation in the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa (ARASA) 2008 Annual Training of Trainers Programme on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights.

This training programme is held on an annual basis for 28 participants (2 from each country) with a view to developing a pool of expertise in the SADC region on HIV and Human Rights. There is an urgent need to raise awareness about the need for a rights-based response to the epidemic and build capacity on HIV and human rights in these countries, particularly since many of the Southern African countries are in the process of developing policies and plans that will shape the national response to HIV/AIDS in those countries. Training civil society representatives from different countries in the region as trainers in the field of HIV and Human Rights as well as in effective advocacy strategies will ensure that capacity on these issues will be built in each of the countries in the region.

The programme comprises the following workshops, which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa:

- A five-day basic training of trainers workshop (7-11 April 2008)

- A two-day specialised training workshops (7-8 May and 19-20 August 2008)

- A five-day advanced training of trainers workshops (22-26 September 2008).

WHAT DOES THE TRAINING OF TRAINERS PROGRAMME SEEK TO ACHIEVE?

The training of trainers will equip participants with:

- A more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between health and human rights and the importance of a rights-based response to HIV/AIDS;
- Insight into examples of good practices in the region in developing a rights-based response to HIV/AIDS;
- A better understanding of the international and regional treaties, declaration and guidelines that should be used to shape national responses to HIV/AIDS;
- Guidance on how to use law and policy to promote a human rights based response to HIV/AIDS;
- Tools for effective advocacy around HIV/AIDS and Human Rights; and
- Tools for conducting effective training on HIV and Human Rights.

In the selection of participants, preference is given to persons who:

1. Are from civil society organisations working on HIV/AIDS and human rights in SADC countries

2. Hold positions of leadership within their own organisations
