MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

ARE YOU READY TO LEAD?
JANUARY 3- 9, 2010
U.N. MANDATED UNIVERSITY FOR PEACE
CIUDAD COLON, COSTA RICA
Special One Week Intensive · $1950pp complete

A
FRIENDSHIP AMBASSADORS FOUNDATION GLOBAL LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE
ADVANCING THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS IN COOPERATION WITH THE U.N.
MANDATED UNIVERSITY FOR PEACE
The Millennium Development
Leadership Programme will provide you with the skills and knowledge to
start and lead projects related to achieving the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs).
This intensive certificate programme will be hosted on
the campus of the UN University for Peace located in the mountains of
Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica.

Partial scholarships available upon request after acceptance by application, which is available at www.faf.org.
SPECIAL OFFER: DUE TO EARLY SPRING ACADEMIC CALENDARS, A ONE WEEK MDLP PROGRAMME IS NOW AVAILABLE: January 3 - 9, 2010

After
numerous requests from university faculty concerning their Spring 2010
academic calendar return dates, the MDLP is now available for one week.

The course will approximate the intensive training period related to the Youth Assembly at the United Nations in past years.
Experienced
professionals and practitioners in the field with a record of success
will conduct and facilitate the certificate program.
The Programme
will enable young professionals to learn, network and build on their
capacity. The MDLP is limited to 40 participants with a demonstrated
interest in international development or relevant work experience.
"Thanks
to FAF and the projects I worked on, including the conference at the
U.N., I was able to become one of the best students in my generation at
home, and I found a job thanks to those experiences in the government
of the Republic of Macedonia. I personally think that FAF's vision is
common with President Obama's plan for resolving many global issues:
President Obama wants to invest in education and health, where the
results can only be seen after a longer period of time. With FAF, it is
the same: the strongest results will only be witnessed after some time.
I am an example of that success. Thank you, Friendship Ambassadors
Foundation."
Dajana Ognjanoska
Assistant for Legal Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Republic of Macedonia
May 2009

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Coursework and Faculty

Join
respected internationally recognized faculty from the UN-Mandated
University for Peace and NGO specialists from around the world. Visit
actual NGO field projects during the course and live in an eco-style
hostel during your stay.
WHAT IS CASE STUDY ANALYSIS? Case study
analysis is an effective way for professionals to develop the critical
thinking skills needed to effectively manage organizations and
programs.

Unlike lectures or materials presented solely in
written format, case studies present a narrative overview of the events
that have occurred at a particular NGO in Costa Rica (which you will
visit during the course).

Analysis of the steps other leaders
have taken to address specific problems and issues will give you the
opportunity to learn about the challenges you may encounter.

Your problem solving skills will be cultivated as you engage in a team-based critique of existing projects.

Sunday,
Jan 3: Arrival, Orientation to Area and Accommodations; Context for
coursework, following NGO work in region; Roles of UPEACE & FAF

mentors.

case study in terms of actual visit, from different aspects, depending
on mentor faculty working with each subgroup. Long day and night: with
breaks between, each subgroup and individuals prepare presentations.

Thursday,
Jan 7: Presentation of sub group and individual responses to case
study. NGO leader from field study will be present, along with invited
media: large press conference format. Final review with faculty ending
session with media in a panel discussion on the topic: Youth led or
directed NGO Management of MDG Projects: Opportunities &
Challenges.

Friday, Jan 8: Day of cultural immersion and
delegate networking. Drive down out of the mountains, stopping at
cultural sites along the route. Arrive by afternoon to Manuel Antonio
and its famous national park and eco-fascinating facilities. Dinner at

MDLP: A NEW PARTNERSHIP

UPEACE AND FAF: Practical Skills in a Very Special Location
The
University for Peace (www.upeace.org) is the only university in the
United Nations system authorized to offer academic degrees in the field
of peace and conflict studies. Nine master's programmes offer
specialized, multi-disciplinary courses and our international faculty
use engaging and participatory teaching models for classroom
instruction. Advanced students and young professionals from around the
world attend the University.
The campus is located 30 km southwest
of the capital San Jose, in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica, within a natural
reserve composed of a secondary forest and the last remnant of primary
forest (1,200 ha) in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. Hence, this
protected area is very rich in fauna. It shelters mammals such as
monkeys, deer, and reptiles; and over 300 species of birds as well as
approximately 100 varieties of trees. The University's installations
and protected area make up 303 ha.

cultural exchanges focus on the reduction of tensions, increased mutual
understanding, global cooperation, intercultural reconciliation and the
ability of civil society to meet in meaningful ways.
In 2009 FAF has
collaborated with the United Nations, among others, in organizing the
annual Youth Assembly, an acclaimed event that since 2004 regularly
attracts hundreds of participants to United Nations Headquarters to
engage with initiatives on eradicating poverty and hunger, fighting HIV
and AIDS, and promoting environmental sustainability.

FAF is a
nonprofit, tax-exempt organization formally associated with the UN
Department of Public Information and is an NGO in Operational Relations
with UNESCO.

After application acceptance, partial scholarship support may be requested from FAF if necessary.
