Dear Ma,
Pls, find below attached copy of our extension programme report.
CENTRE FOR GOVERNANCE AND QUALITATIVE STUDIES (CGQS)
REPORT ON DTA COMMUNITY- EDUCATION COMMUNITY EXTENSION PROGRAMME IN OREGUN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, LAGOS
24th October, 2007.
CENTRE FOR GOVERNANCE & QUALITATIVE STUDIES (CGQS) began the DTA extension with the conduction of an extensive desk review and an in-depth research into the basic factors capable of sustaining the impact of the Extension programmes in communities and secondary schools.
The assessment revealed a parallel pattern of retention amongst school students, and indicated likelihoods of communities slowing down on continuity over a period of time, especially as it relates universal basic education (goal 4)
CGQS observed and projected to work in-tune with the United Nations International day for the eradication of poverty and the Worlds Information development day, to re- iterate the core values that identify the struggles to achieving the Millennium development goals.
It is on this premise that we took the 4- hours extension program in Oregun Senior High School, Lagos on the 24th October 2007 at 11am, with 47 students in attendance, alongside 5 other college teachers representing the school, and 2 invitee- teachers who attended to observe the program, representing Dansol College and Caylay College, Lagos. This is excluding the two facilitators of the program.
The theme of the seminar is BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE AND ERADICATING EXTREME POVERTY AND HUNGER AMONGST YOUTHS THROUGH ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND ENTREPRENEURAL EDUCATION
A mini- handout focused and bordering on the issues, trends and challenges of MDGs. the NEEDs document and the roles of civil society in sustainable project impacts was designed and distributed to participants in attendance, with a co- facilitator assisting from Global Youth Action Society Network (GYASN).
EXPECTATIONS:
The Global aim/vision as shared in the DTA experience and amongst participants of the seminar, is to create and produce youths that can contribute and take actions towards achieving the MDGs in developing countries, using all technologies and art forms available, whilst taking into account local realities, and using the most effective application to reach maximum impact.
The greatest motivation of the seminar is that participants will return to their respective classrooms and communities overflowing with inspiration and conviction that youths, and adults, together, can, and should initiate and support programs with geared towards achieving the MDGs.
OBSERVATIONS & LESSONS:
Discussion at the seminar welcomed in-puts from participants and it was focally identified that civil societies should demonstrate more commitment to initiating, promoting and encouraging child-centered community development programs in Nigeria, as well as work to build synergy; Protection and Participation of communities and students, as well as those in line with the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs).
Specifically the Seminar:
a) Improved the knowledge and encourage actions from youths participants and adults in attendance, especially as it relates to their immediate communities.
b) Identified factors and social actors, which and who can participate in helping them to achieve the MDG aims.
Inspite of the high expectations of what can be done to improve the MDG situation in Nigeria, ACTION, INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT are the only key factors observed as adequate to reach the desired goal. For other developing countries, with extreme situations MOTIVATION, FUNDING and AWARENESS may be more strategic. If these were succinctly viewed together with ACCESS and FEEDBACKS, the MDG project will record more impacts than ever before.
SUGGESTIONS AT THE SEMINAR:
1. Student- Adults alliances should be encouraged by introducing special Peer Educator Training Programs (This may be proposed to the BRITISH COUNCIL/WORLD BANK INSTITUTE).
2. From the experience and exposition garnered during the program, it is suggested that CGQS can initiate and engage appropriate Government quarters/agencies to support/partner in promoting the MDG projects in Nigeria.
3. CGQS can institute a thorough request, through Proposal, to represent BRITISH COUNCIL in the global DTA.
4. BRITISH COUNCIL should establish, maintain and sustain relationships with all the interested NGO participants, to build her continent- wide status and consultative strength on the DTA project.
Thank you.
