Abuja — A democratic government is a government of the people; it is a social condition where the people are the political force. Therefore, for Nigeria to have a working democratic system of government, it should employ some of thee tools:

First, the three arms of government should be independent; especially the judiciary. The judiciary must have job security, if they are to execute their duties effectively and efficiently. Every Nigerian should have uninhibited access to the judicial system, for a democratic government to work. The judiciary must work without fear or favour.
Secondly, the government should adopt the deliberative leadership style. This leadership style entails building on the capacities of the citizens to think, talk and work together in their common interest. For a democratic government to work, it must learn to incorporate the opinions of the populace when making decisions. Since most elected public office holders have failed in their duties, a referendum could be adopted to get public opinion.
Lastly, the press should have freedom to do their duties. They are most times the people's eyes and mouth. Therefore, if a democratic government is to work, the press must live up to the people's expectation. The Freedom of Information Bill is a big step forward to making the press effective.
