Women's Refugee Commission)
The Women's Refugee Commission is recruiting new members for its Youth
Advisory Group. The group was formed in January 2008 to help guide and
inform the Women's Refugee Commission's Displaced Youth Project-a global
research and advocacy initiative that aims to increase international
attention and support for quality and appropriate education and job
training for displaced, conflict-affected young women and men. The
Women's Refugee Commission has been fortunate to have the involvement of
15 extraordinary young women and men from around the world-and is now
seeking to invite new members to replace those rotating off in December
2009.
The Women's Refugee Commission's Displaced Youth initiative is a
multi-year, global research and advocacy project that seeks to increase
the scope, scale and effectiveness of educational services and programs
targeting displaced young people (15-24 years old). The Initiative
focuses on programs that include practical education, employment
readiness and life skills components. For more information, please visit

.
As a mechanism for consultation and partnership with displaced young
people, the Women's Refugee Commission established a Youth Advisory
Group in January 2008 to help guide and inform the project. The Women's
Refugee Commission is now looking to recruit new members to the group.
The Youth Advisory Group is made up of 15 rotating young people between
the ages of 15 and 24 who have been identified from amongst existing
Women's Refugee Commission partners, with an emphasis on geographic, sex
and age balance, and the inclusion of typically under-represented groups
such as teenage mothers, former child soldiers and young people with
disabilities. The Advisory Group provides:
Ongoing input and guidance to the Displaced Youth initiative;
Introductions to recommended individuals and organizations to meet on
field assessments;
Input to Women's Refugee Commission's materials, such as research
questions, trip reports, advocacy briefs and articles;
Collaboration on research and advocacy initiatives, as appropriate;
Suggestions of youth projects and activities for further research and
investigation;
Expectations of Youth Advisory Group members
One year commitment through 2010, with possibility of extending for
another 2-3 years.
Active participation via online forum (google group)
Timely feedback on requested activities such as document reviews via email.
Suggestions of contacts and youth organizations in the field
Requirements for member selection
Experience of living in a conflict or post-conflict environment, and/or
of displacement
Commitment to youth participation and an understanding of the major
issues involved
Involvement in youth-related activities, groups and/or networks
Regular access to a computer with internet access
Ability to speak, read and write in English (to the level of reviewing
formal documents)
Applicants must be between the ages of 15 - 24
Please note that this is an unpaid position.
Members benefit by expanding and strengthening their skills through
training opportunities and the experience of participating in the group,
networking with fellow members and partner organizations and the
opportunity to advocate for themselves and their peers.
