Hello everyone! I hope that all is well.
A brief update following the CCR's Working Group meetings in Montreal
this past weekend:
*Youth voices in CCR discussions*
There was a lot of interest in what Youth Network members are working
on. All three CCR working groups would like to hear more youth
perspectives (the three working groups are: Immigration and Settlement
(issues affecting refugees and immigrants in Canada including
integration and access to services), Overseas Protection and Sponsorship
(meaning issues affecting refugees outside of Canada and before
resettlement to Canada), and Inland Protection (meaning: protection for
refugees in Canada). The Immigration and Settlement Working Group and
the Overseas Protection and Sponsorship Working Group each have an open
space that they would like to reserve for a youth representative.
For more information about the Working Groups and the issues that they
deal with see: http://ccrweb.ca/en/node/296
*Youth Orientation Day - December 2nd, Windsor Ontario*
Youth Orientation Day: CCR Executive members are very supportive and can
be used as resources (for speakers and some assistance). Should we plan
for a full-day or half-day session on Wednesday, December 2nd in Windsor
(before the CCR Consultation on 3-5 December)? We need to begin:
planning the event, deciding on session themes and organizers. If you
are interested in getting involved, please join us on the next Youth
Network conference call (details below).
Here are some suggestions of what to discuss on the Youth Orientation
Day. If you have other suggestions, send an email to Oana at:
oanabella (at) gmail.com
- Introduction to CCR (who is CCR, what it does, etc)
- What is a CCR Consultation, why is important to have these
Consultations, what happens at a CCR Consultation, - what to expect out
of a CCR Consultation
- the importance of youth involvement within the CCR, how youth can
become involved in the CCR
- what the workshops would be about (intro to each issues being
discussed in the workshops in more details)
- Intro to Canada's refugee system (basics about the refugee system)
- How to pass a resolution at the general meeting
- what happens during a working group meeting (ie: being able to ask
questions at the end)
- general info useful for youth/share ideas (fundraising, working on a
local project)
- leadership roles withing youth network and representation (how are
people selected to be on different steering committees)
- youth mentorship program
- other ideas that you have (please send them to me or Oana)
*CCR Consultation sessions for-youth-by-youth*
The Canadian Council for Refugees will be holding its next, national
conference 3-5 December 2009 in Windsor ON. Information about the
Consultation will soon be available on the CCR's website at:
http://www.ccrweb.ca/eng/about/meetings.htm
Here are some of the youth sessions being planned for the Consultation:
- a Youth Caucus session is included in the CCR Consultation program on
Thursday, December 3rd from 11 am to 12:30pm
- a workshop on access to post-secondary education (overcoming barriers
to completing secondary school or financial barriers to attending
college, university and other professional programs) - Thursday,
December 3rd, 4-5:30 pm
If you are interested in helping to organize one of these sessions,
please let me know. We will also be talking about these sessions on the
next conference call.
*Next Youth Network Conference call
*Having a conference call on the weekend seems to work best for most
people, but not everyone. Here are three days and times for the next
conference call. Please let me know which one is best for you (and
which ones don't work for you at all). Please send me your preferences
by email to cfrench (at) ccrweb.ca by next Monday, September 21st:

(Atlantic), 3 pm (Manitoba), 2 pm (Alberta), 1 pm (BC)
Sunday, September 27th (evening) at 8 pm (Ontario, Québec), 9 pm

Monday, September 28th (evening) at 8 pm (Ontario, Québec), 9 pm
