*Call for action: Stand up for refugees!
*Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen dramatic attacks on
refugees, and on the notion that Canada should have strong refugee
protection policies. A number of restrictive measures have already been
implemented, and more are promised. Government discourse seems designed
to provoke a public backlash against refugees and the refugee protection
system (it is certainly having that effect).
To respond, we believe the priorities right now are:
*1. To broaden opposition to the anti-refugee measures by having allies
speak out. *
Refugee advocates are of course reacting -- but we need to hear from
other sectors of Canadian society.
Please reach out to:
* Faith communities
* Labour movement
* Human rights groups
* Immigrant/ethnic communities
* Former refugees who are now well-established
* Student groups
* Any other potential allies
Urge them to take a public stand in favour of refugee protection, for
example by sending an open letter or publishing comments in mainstream
or community media.
We have prepared a one-pager for you to share with potential allies,
see: http://ccrweb.ca/en/standupforrefugees
Over the coming weeks, we will be working on other actions, depending on
suggestions for allies. Keep in touch with the CCR (Colleen French,
cfrench (at) ccrweb.ca) -- let us know your ideas and what successes you have.
*
2. To approach Members of Parliament*
The Liberals currently seem divided on refugee issues, so they are the
highest priority. But it is also important to contact MPs of other parties.
Suggested messages:
* To Liberals: concern that Liberals are failing to give clear
support to refugee protection (as signalled by lack of support on
the C-291 - the refugee appeal bill - and lack of strong position
in response to the recent anti-refugee measures).
* To NDP and Bloc Québécois: we need them to be energetic in
opposition to the government's anti-refugee moves.
* To Conservatives: why has their government become so anti-refugee?
You can also share the one-pager with MPs. Find it at:

Again, keep in touch with the CCR (Colleen French, cfrench (at) ccrweb.ca) to
let us know what response you get.
