Here is a story from Bill Moore of EVworld:

"Father D'Agostino Eco-Village Becomes Reality
Friday, I had the opportunity to interview Father Angelo D'Agostino, a
medical doctor and Jesuit priest who has spent much of his life in the
impoverished parts of the world. His most recent stint aboard as been in
Kenya where he founded the Nyumbani ("my home" in Swahili). The village is
designed to house 1000 orphans who have lost both their parents to AIDS. The
exact number of AIDS-related orphans in Africa is estimated between 12 and
25 million. Patterned after the Boys & Girls Town system of individual
"family homes" here in Omaha, a surviving grandparent or elder will
supervise and mentor each "family" of 8-10 children who will be housed in
homes built from locally-made adobe-like bricks.
The idea behind the complex stems from a book Father Angelo and I have both
read, "Gaviotas -- A Village to Reinvent the World." Part of the plan is to
educate the children and provide them with a trade, one of which includes
the planting, nurturing, harvesting and processing of the Jatropha Curcas
tree from which can be processed a biodiesel oil. There are already 400
acres of Jatropha under cultivation at Nyumbani, which is about a hour east
of Nairobi. What the village doesn't use for its own power and other uses,
the government has agreed to buy for its electric power generators in the
northern part of the country.
This is really an inspiring interview, which we'll have online later this
week. In the meantime, if you want to learn more, checkout www.nyumbani.org
Until next time, stay plugged into EVWorld..."
I highly recommend EVworld for those interested in EcoTransportation with a
technical, enviro/eco and social viewpoint.
Cheers
Rick
